Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

Whiteness

There was a certain amount of angst when I discovered my first grey hair at the age of 15. No matter how many times a family member says its "distinguished" or "it really suits you", it cannot make up for the ridicule and humiliation that is dealt out at school by friends.

Luckily though I'm not at school, and having survived that period of my life, I've realised that sticks and stones are for the most part, excluding rugby boots and the fairer sex, the things that hurt. After all, when someone can say it is distinguished without a) being related; b) thumping you afterwards; and c) making reference to Gandalf, you begin to believe it. Believability is further enforced by candlelight, music, a moderate amount of alcohol and the company of a member of the opposite sex, but that's another matter.

By the age of twenty six I have since moved on from referring it to as grey, updating it to white, perhaps subconsciously "dying" it to make it live up to its distinguished reputation, and have come to terms with it. I might even go as far to say I am happy with it, and having done so, it seems only fitting that I have discovered my first white hair on my chin.

Strangely, I am not as worried by this as I thought I might be, and in an odd way I am looking forward to seeing how this pans out. In fairness, its probably as good a time as any. If I were further advanced in years and had started questioning my lot in life then this would be as good excuse any to go out and buy a sports car and do lots of things a man of advanced age shouldn't. Luckily, I can still do them, remain distinguished and not look like I'm suffering from a mid life crisis. It would appear that white is the new black, or in my case the new brown.
