Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

The Magicians Guild by Trudi Canavan

The Magicians Guild

Trudi Canavan

3.5 out of 5 stars

'If this young woman is a natural, we should expect her to be more powerful than our average novice, possibly even more powerful than the average magician...she will be a considerable danger to the city.'

'Then we must find her - and those who have taught her'

'If she is a rogue, we are bound by the law to bring her and her teachers to the King. She is barely more than a child'

'If she is a rogue we will apply the law.'

The story deals with the awakening of Magical Powers of a young lower class girl during the annual slum clearances by the Magicians on behalf of the king, and the Guild's split over how to best deal with the situation, and as magical fantasy books go, this one spends a lot of the time shying away from magic and is more concerned with the social issues, prejudices and the politics of the main protagonists.

The plot is relatively linear, and occasionally, peoples thoughts don't tie up with their actions, and in this, you begin to ask why did we have that long discussion, but hey. Many of the extra characters are quite interesting, and it would be nice to see them developed, although not at the expense of the plot.

All in all the story, whilst well written seems more like a setup for the second book in the trilogy, The Novice, as it ties up the majority of the plot lines and resolves many of the issues, but leaves many of them open and even starts new ones. This seems to be a trend for books written as part of a trilogy of late and I am sure it creates an element of anti-climax with a lack of closure, perhaps because I know the story continues, but I digress.

Well worth a read, but you'll be wanting to carry on the story further, which is perhaps a quality of a good book.
