Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

How Did I...

Looking back at the coding on some of the pages in this site with a view to migrating it over to a new machine, and its suddenly occured to me that I have no idea how it works, or in some cases why it doesn't.

I have links to several MySQL databases, including things to do with tracking and users online, which I don't appear to use anywhere. I have a page which is notionally meant to give various bits of info about the server and the network, but most of it is broken, mislinking or for some reason not displaying at all.

There are also long forgotten pages such as Songwriter which once fulfilled a purpose, but now sits cluttering the server.

I think the problem is that once I got most of the functions working, I stopped tinkering to a great degree. It is for this reason I have 404 and 403 pages drawn on paper yet not making it onto the web for one reason or another.

I feel that to get the best out of the software, a new install followed by lots of corrective coding is the way forward. Presumably, if I got it right (or nearly so) once, then I should be able to do it again.

Right?
