Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

Durham Red: The Unquiet Grave: Pt.1

3.5 out of 5 stars

'I'm a thousand years young, I've got a bod built for high-speed sin, and there's a while universe out there which hasn't met me - so let's go!'

Mutant, Vampire. Total babe! Former Search and Destroy Agent Durham Red is stranded over a thousand years into a future she doesn't want. To the mutant underclass, she's a messiah, a beacon of light to rally around. To humankind, she's a terrifying blasphemy, that should be hunted down and destroyed. All Red wants is to get her kicks whilse she still can, but a nightmare tribe of blood-worshippers have other ideas. The moon of Lavonnos seems like the perfect place to lie low, but Red discovers that the frozen world hides horrors more terrifying than she could possibly imagine!

From the pages of 2000AD Durham Red makes the leap from Graphic Novels to literature. Given that within the former, the protaginator generally spends her time running around engaging in spectacular violence and generally entertaining escapades., this was never going to be overly high brow, and there is the danger that the aesthetics and art would reduce the impact. I was however suprised at how enjoyable the book is. The plot moves along and Evans does well to enhance on the world Dan Abnett created in The Scarlet Cantos as illustrated by Mark Harrison. Choosing to fill in the gaps after her 1200 year hypersleep and the events in Scarlet, Evans has the opportunity to explore new ideas without the constraints of the 2000AD world, so if you're looking for Dredd, you be found wanting.

Saying that, the characters are interesting and there is plenty of development, mainly thanks to the McGuffin that Red is worshipped by mutants and a blasphemy to all mankind. Although I would consider her an anti-hero, she is very likeable as a character and I look forward to following her in future books.
