Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

Upgrades

Having decided on a strategem for updating this site. I figure rather than doing standard upgrades over the existing CMS, I would like to take the opportunity to upgrade the web serving apps such as Apache, PHP, Perl and MySQL amongst others. At least this way I will have a clean slate to start from before I get on with tinkering with the aesthetics and making the sites more standards compliant and user friendly.

As such the plan goes as follows:

  1. Migrate the static pages to a secondary webserver
  2. Confirm secondary server works
  3. Create an SQL dump of ALL databasea and ALL static templates
  4. Create an MT dump of ALL entries from ALL sites
  5. Backup the databases and webroots inc images
  6. Backup the config files
  7. Uninstall existing software rem: remove path variables
  8. Panic as I will no doubt have forgotten something.
  9. Install new software
  10. Install new CMS
  11. Install plugins
  12. Install/copy ALL static templates
  13. Copy ALL static images
  14. Import ALL entries
  15. Rebuild Site
  16. Rejoice. Maybe.

Hopefully I should be able to do this with minimum interuption to other services such as mail and ftp. Once I start there probably will be few updates, but if things go wrong I'll let you know. Most of this will happen in the evenings this week, with an aim to have finished everything by close of play Sunday.

17) Remember you forgot something in the backups and run around like a headless chicken trying to work out how to get the data back

Wish ya luck :)
