Scratch
Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.
Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.
On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.
A Streetcar Named Desire [1951]

During my A-Levels, I spent a considerable amount of time reading post WWII American literature by Miller, Williams etc, but of all the books, one that I remember particularly well, and I think fondly, is A Street Car Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.
The 1951 film adaptation is faithful to the original play, and is an impressive vehicle for the talents of Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, and Karl Malden. The stark contrast between Leigh's Blanche DuBois, a pretentious, fading relic of the Old South, and Brando's Stanley Kowalski, a rising member of the industrial, inner-city immigrant class, only emphasises the culture clash evident throughout the play.
Whilst most people remember this film for Brando, its Leigh who is the foil that allows him to shine, and compared to other heroines who have played one of Williams's doomed heroines, it is Leigh who best personifies the fate of a fragile soul in a changing world.
