Scratch
Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.
Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.
On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.
Andrey Kurkov and George Bird

In today's Ukraine, all that stands between one man and the Mafia is a penguin.
Viktor is an aspiring writer with only Misha, his pet penguin, for company. Although he would prefer to write short stories, he earns a living composing obituaries for a newspaper. He longs to see his work published, although the subjects of his obituaries continue to cling to life. But when he opens the newspaper to find his work in print for the first time, his pride swiftly tums to terror and he and Misha are drawn into a trap from which there appears to be no escape.
Much like A Matter of Death and Life, the story is set in the Ukraine in the aftermath of the Soviet Union. It is a tale filled with black humour that follows a journalist called Victor and his flatmate Misha, his depressed Penguin who he rescued from the under-funded zoo in Kiev. He gets a job writing obituaries about prominant people for the city paper, and quickly transforms himself from struggling writer to wealthy journalist. Soon however, it becomes readily apparent that things are not quite as they seem and there is more to his situation thatn he first thought, and very soon things begin to go awry.
