Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

Dogwitch: Direct to Video

Daniel Schaffer

4 out of 5 stars

Collecting issues #1-6. Introducing Violet Grimm, arcane sex symbol and snuff movie superstar, and her weird and wonderful cohorts, her filmaker Ralph (a stuffed dog), Dolores (a scrape faced kewpie doll), and Mr. Kinky, not to mention deranged fans, frisky zombies, and screaming habdabs. Get back to B-movie basics - it's hack 'n' slash a-go-go! Introduction by two-time Bram Stoker Award winner, Michael A. Arnzen.

"I'm a neo-ecto-maxi-pagan...voodoo junkie and dabblin' ouija monkey! I'm the saucy spellbinder...the zoom-doom floozy, spawn of spooky... I'M THE GODDAMN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY DOGWITCH!"

The name says it all. Not particularly mainstream and probably not for the easily offended, Daniel Schaffer's self penned (in both senses of the word) Dogwitch is, IMHO, everything a horror comic should be. Its deep, its dark, its sexy, and it doesn't pull the punches. Its not cliched, it is funny, and whilst it could descend into some Elvira esque rip, its doesn't and remains unique and trendsetting in its own right. The writing is clever and succint and the artwork reflects this. This is no Jim Lee art, and in this instance, thats not a problem. The stark black and white aspect suits the setting, the characters, and is reflective of the writing and plot. Don't get me wrong, Schaffer's coloured artwork for promos, pinups and sketches are bitchin, but the B&W is right for the interiors. Go read the free issue for free.

Oh, and avoid the bunnies.

..and the habdabs.
