On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

Earlier this evening, I had the fortune to go to a preview screening of The Painted Veil, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on the W. Somerset Maugham novel, set in the 1920s, the story centers around the 'relationship' between the shallow socialite Kitty (Naomi Watts) who has the quiet and reserved Dr. Walter Fane (Edward Norton) fall in love with her. They marry quickly, mainly so Kitty can escape the parental home, and soon find themselves in Shanghai where Fane works as a microbiologist. It is there she meets Charlie Townsend (Liev Schreiber) with whom she starts an affair, although Fane inevitably finds out and issues an ultimatum - either join him in a remote location whilst he deals with a cholera outbreak, or they divorce. It is whilst they are alone, that they begin to discover more about themselves and each other and to begin to heal their damaged relationship.
The film is remarkably shot against a backdrop that is truly stunning. This coupled with an ever present score by Alexandre Desplat/Lang Lang makes the film a pleasure to watch, on enhanced by Norton and Watts' talents.
