Scratch

Here you will find older scratches, musings and other detritus that once were located on the front pages, but have now faded.

Filed away here to collect dust and cobwwwebs in perpetuity, links may break, facts may change and data may corrupt.

On occasion I may come down here to tidy, but for the most, I prefer to leave the past where it lies.

iPod, Therefore I Am by Dylan Jones

iPod, Therefore I Am

Dylan Jones

3 out of 5 stars

Dylan Jones first started buying records in 1972, when he was eleven, and he's been at it ever since. His life has been a thirty-year binge of glam rock, punk rock, disco and rap. A life that has included, at various points the Buzzcocks, the Beatles, the Sex Pistols, Prince, Roxy Music, Van Morrison, John Coltrane and ten thousand more.

For three decades his world has been chock-full of disparate pop stars and their disparate records. Some have sculpted his mindset and behaviours, and others have contributed to the soundtrack of his life. In their own way every record has informed his existence. His close friends in graduated technology were his record player, tape deck, Walkman and CD player, but when the iPod cam along it revolutionized his world. It has rekindled his lifelong obsession with records and modernized the way he, and we, listen to music.

This generation is already being defined as the iGeneration, and the iPod as the defining toy of the twenty-first century. Part personal memoir, part product history, iPod, Therefore I am is a book about the idea, inception and invention of the iPod, its astounding effect on the music industry and on our own rollercoaster love affair with music.

An entertaining read as to how music has influenced Dylan Jones' life. Its loosely swings from historical analysis to biography and back again, filled with insightful thoughts, anectdotes and witticisms. It also contains lists and lists of records which like amazon recommendations prove interesting reading.

If you found High Fidelity intersting, there is a good chance you'll like this.
